Day 1: From the Airport via Anuradhapura to the Sigiriya Region

Day1 Itinerary

Assuming you arrive at the airport in the morning — or depart from your hotel in Negombo if you arrived the previous day. If your flight lands in the afternoon, it’s best to head straight to a hotel in the Sigiriya area.

From the airport, travel approximately 4 hours by private charter to Anuradhapura, the first UNESCO World Heritage Site on the itinerary. Have lunch near Anuradhapura before starting your sightseeing.

Lunch Options (Anuradhapura):

  • Seedevi Family Restaurant – A large restaurant offering Sri Lankan, Indian, and Chinese cuisine. Their lunchtime buffet is especially popular for its wide variety of dishes.
  • Ceylan Lodge Restaurant – A hotel-attached restaurant serving everything from seafood platters to European-style dishes. A relaxing spot to unwind during the midday heat.

Exploring Anuradhapura’s sprawling ruins and sacred sites typically takes 2 to 3 hours.

Anuradhapura

From there, travel about 2 hours to Heritance Kandalama. Designed by the legendary architect Geoffrey Bawa, Heritance Kandalama is the most famous hotel in Sri Lanka and a must-stay destination for any visitor to the island.

Day 2: Climb Sigiriya Rock and Enjoy a Safari at Minneriya National Park

Day2 itinerary

Start the morning early with a visit to Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Depart your hotel first thing, and after a roughly 40-minute drive, you’ll arrive at the base of the iconic rock.

Sigiriya rock

Climb the stairway to the summit of this massive 200-meter rock fortress. At the top, explore the ancient palace ruins and enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Along the way, don’t miss the famous frescoes known as the Sigiriya Maidens painted on the rock face. The entire visit takes approximately 2 hours.

After descending, grab lunch nearby.

Lunch Options (Sigiriya Area):

  • Ahinsa Restaurant – Serves local favorites like fish curry, chicken curry, and kottu roti. Air-conditioned interior for cooling off after the climb.
  • Soul Food Café – A charming café with a terrace overlooking Sigiriya Rock. Offers plant-based, healthy dishes — perfect for giving your stomach a rest. Air-conditioned seating available inside.

In the afternoon, head to Minneriya National Park for a jeep safari.

Minneriya is famous for its large herds of wild elephants. Board a jeep and spend 2 to 3 hours on a game drive through vast green plains and lakeside landscapes. In many cases, your driver can arrange the jeep tour directly — just ask.

After the safari, return to Heritance Kandalama for the evening.

Day 3: Travel from the Sigiriya Region to Kandy

Day3 itinerary

Depart in the morning for Kandy (approximately 3 hours from Kandalama). Along the way, stop at the Giragama Tea Factory near Kandy to observe the Ceylon tea production process.

Geragama Tea Factory

Tour the factory nestled among lush tea plantations, watch how the tea is processed, and sample freshly brewed Ceylon tea.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

Afterward, continue into Kandy to visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of Buddhism’s most important pilgrimage sites. This beautiful temple sits beside Kandy Lake and houses a revered tooth relic of the Buddha. The atmosphere inside is profoundly serene.

After the temple visit, enjoy lunch in Kandy.

Lunch Options (Kandy):

  • Devon Restaurant & Bakery – A popular local family restaurant with a diverse menu spanning Sri Lankan and Western dishes. The clean interior and excellent selection of baked goods and pastries are added bonuses.
  • Slightly Chilled Lounge – An open-air restaurant on a hilltop overlooking Kandy Lake. Breezy and comfortable, with options from light bites to full meals. Ideal for an afternoon rest stop.

After sightseeing, check in to your hotel in or near Kandy for the night.

Recommended Hotels (Kandy):
The Golden Crown Hotel (modern 5-star hotel)
Cinnamon Citadel Kandy (riverside resort with excellent views)

Day 4: Travel from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya

Day4 itinerary

Drive from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, enjoying spectacular tea plantation scenery along the way.

In Nuwara Eliya, we recommend staying at Heritance Tea Factory. This unique hotel has been converted from an actual tea factory, and its interior retains the original industrial charm.

Day 5: Ride the Famous Tea Train and See the Nine Arch Bridge

Day5 itinerary

Head to Bandarawela Station, about 1.5 hours from Nuwara Eliya, to board the iconic Sri Lanka hill country train.

We recommend riding from Bandarawela Station to Demodara Station — one stop past Ella. This is because the famous Nine Arch Bridge lies between Ella and Demodara, and you’ll get to see it from the train.

Book your tickets via 12Go.Asia. We recommend reserving seats in 2nd or 3rd class, as 1st class carriages do not allow you to open the windows — a key part of the experience.

Even if reserved seats are sold out, your driver can help you purchase same-day tickets at the station. You may have to stand, but since the ride is only about 1 hour, it’s still an enjoyable experience.

Get picked up at Demodara Station and head to Ella for lunch.
